Coreless Gear Motors

A coreless gear motor is a type of electric motor that features a rotor without an iron core. Instead of using a traditional iron core, the rotor of a coreless gear motor is typically made up of a coil of fine wire. This design eliminates the heavy iron core and reduces the moment of inertia, resulting in a lighter and more efficient motor.

Coreless gear motors are known for their high performance and offer several advantages. They provide high torque, high speed, and high precision motion control. Due to their compact structure and lightweight design, they are commonly used in applications that require fast and precise movements, such as robotics, model making, medical devices, and automation equipment.

Coreless Gear Motor has some advantages:

  • High Efficiency: Due to the absence of an iron core, the rotor of a mini coreless gear motor is lighter with a lower moment of inertia, enabling quick start and stop and providing efficient operation.
  • High Torque: The rotor of a coreless gear motor uses fine wire coils, allowing for more uniform distribution of current across the entire rotor, resulting in greater torque.
  • High Speed: With a lighter rotor, coreless gear motors can achieve higher rotational speeds, providing faster motion.
  • High Precision: Miniature Coreless gear motors have a compact structure, enabling higher levels of motion and control precision.

Coreless Gear Motors are primarily used in the following fields:

  • Robotics: Micro coreless gear motors can be used for joint drives in robots, providing high-speed and high-torque motion capabilities.
  • Model Making: Small coreless gear motors can be used for power-driven model aircraft, model vehicles, etc., offering high-speed and high-torque power support.
  • Medical Devices: Coreless gear motors can be used for precise position control in medical equipment, such as surgical robots and medical instruments.
  • Automation Equipment: Tiny coreless gear motors can be used for precise control in automation equipment, such as automatic doors, automatic curtains, vending machines, etc.

Coreless gear motor uses a stator without a core, or an armature without a commutator. The windings are supported by the housing and the rotor. The rotor is typically a permanent magnet, but may also be an electromagnet.

The stator of a coreless gear motor is a simple ring of magnets or electromagnets, with the teeth of the gear cut into it, and the rotor is a permanent magnet or an electromagnet, with the teeth of the gear cut into it. The rotor turns inside the stator, and the teeth of the gear mesh, providing the mechanical power output of the motor.

The advantage of a coreless gear motor over a conventional gear motor is that there is no cogging effect, so the motor can start and stop more smoothly. The disadvantage is that the motor is less efficient than a conventional motor, because the magnetic field of the stator is not confined to the air gap between the stator and the rotor. In addition, coreless motors have several advantages over traditional brushed dc motors, including lower electromagnetic interference, and longer lifetime. A coreless gear motor is typically used in applications where smooth operation is more important than efficiency.
